Principal's Message
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,
Welcome to Youth Opportunities Unlimited (Y.O.U.) Alternative High School! It is with great pride and honor that I serve as the principal of such a unique and special school within the Los Angeles Unified School District. At Y.O.U., we are more than just a school – we are a community dedicated to providing our students, aged 14-18 and in grades 9-12, with the personalized support and opportunities they need to succeed.
As an Opportunity School, we are committed to giving students a second chance to thrive academically and socially. Whether your child is looking for a more tailored learning experience or a fresh start, Y.O.U. is here to help them realize their full potential.
I want to share a little bit about my journey with LAUSD. As a former student of this district, my roots run deep in our community. I began my career as a teacher’s assistant in 1989, became a teacher in 1994, and have been working in education for over 30 years. This experience has given me a deep understanding of what it takes to help students overcome challenges and succeed. My door is always open to you, and I am committed to partnering with you to support your child’s growth.
At Y.O.U., we believe:
- We are here to help your child become strong readers and writers, empowering them to succeed in college and their future careers.
- We encourage critical thinking and effective problem-solving so students are ready to handle any situation they may face.
- We support the development of a growth mindset and resilience, helping students turn mistakes into learning opportunities, manage emotions, and grow both academically and socially.
I look forward to working closely with each of you. Together, we can ensure that your child is equipped with the skills, mindset, and confidence they need for a bright future.
Warm regards,
Margaret Olivares-Gilkyson
